Abstract: During the last decades, there has been an increase in literature showing that emotional dysregulation seems to be a core feature of ADHD. Although the prevalence estimates are high, less is known about the specific nature of such difficulties in youth with ADHD or which areas of the regulation process is affected. As adolescence is a phase in life associated with increasing demands on cognition and adaption, this could potentially increase stress in already vulnerable youth with difficulties managing their emotions. In this study, two groups of adolescents between 11-17 years with (n = 26) and without (n = 29) ADHD completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). The results were compared to self-reported emotional stress in the form of trait anxiety and depressive symptoms, and their parents completed forms on their youths perceived emotional lability and ADHD-symptoms. A series of ANCOVAs and linear regression analyses showed that adolescents with ADHD report significantly more emotional dysregulation than their peers, specifically and significantly in the domains of «emotional impulsivity» and «emotional clarity». Of these, emotional «impulsivity» significantly explained both self-reported emotional stress and parent- reported emotional lability. These results lend further support to the importance of emotion dysregulation in ADHD, and implications for theoretical conceptualizations and treatments are discussed.
