Abstract: State Departments of Transportation are considering the use of accelerated construction techniques as a means of reducing traffic congestion during construction.Such techniques may cost more and DOT engineers must justify the increased cost through comparison to user costs. However, in order to determine the cost increase and the time saved in construction (a component of user cost), it is necessary to know the cost and time duration of non-accelerated projects.A benchmarking study is done to determine these values for box girder bridges. This study concludes that the cost of a box girder bridge is approximately $100 + $40/ square foot and the construction duration is approximately 120 days + 40 days. However, no correlation is found between cost and any other parameter of the bridge nor is there any correlation between construction time and any other bridge parameter. This page intentionally left blank.
