Abstract: V n October 1994 the Economic Planning Advisory Commission (EPAC) pub-I lished the results of an opinion survey on public spending preferences in Aus--JL.tralia(Withers et al., 1994).Some of the press reports at the time (such as that in The Australian Financial Review, 31 October 1994) suggested that the study showed that the public is willing to pay more in taxes to finance higher levels of gov ernment spending.The authors' own summary is more accurate: 'It is found that the broad level of public expenditure is in line with taxpayers' wishes in Australia.However, there is also evidence that, on average, taxpayers might prefer some re arrangement of the composition of our public outlays' (p.ii).The study therefore supports continuation of the status quo rather than a large increase or decrease in taxation.
