Abstract: Persistent corneal epithelial defects (PED) are a challenging clincial condition to treat.Recently, Thymosin Beta 4 (T!4) has been under investigation as a novel compound for the treatment of PED.We performed a prospective, randomized clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of T!4 in the treatment of PED in diabetics who underwent corneal epithelial debridement during vitrectomy surgery.Although the trial was closed prematurely due to slow enrollment, the data that was collected was analyzed. In addition, study design considerations with specific regard to possible future studies are discussed.
