Abstract: One of the ultimate frontiers for mankind is the elucidation of the function of the mind. It seems therefore appropriate that in this millennial year—and at the end of the “decade of the brain”—the Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine has recognized the key discoveries of three scientists who have played a significant role in pioneering this frontier. Arvid Carlsson, Paul Greengard, and Eric Kandel have followed very different scientific paths, but in complementary and synergistic ways have made seminal contributions to the current understanding of information processing within the brain.
