Alpha-Synuclein mRNA Is Not Increased in Sporadic PD and Alpha-Synuclein Accumulation Does Not Block GDNF Signaling in Parkinson's Disease and Disease Models
Year: 2017
Type: article
Abstract: Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) protein and gene therapy are currently under clinical investigation in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. GDNF has profound protective effects on dopamine neurons in numerous neurotoxicant PD models in rats and non-human primates.1,2 However, in another PD model generated by recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vector transduction of human alpha-synuclein (α-syn) into the midbrain of the rat GDNF reportedly failed to exert robust neuroprotection.
