A Systematic Approach to Evaluate the Impact of Urban form on Urban Energy Efficiency: A Case Study in Shanghai

Abstract: Previous studies have shown the impact of urban form on the energy consumption in building and transportation sector. However, due to the difficulty of measuring the urban energy efficiency at the whole urban scale, a systematic study on urban energy efficiency has not been found. To solve this problem, a systematic approach that combines Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) and correlation analysis is proposed in this paper. This approach is further applied to five central districts in Shanghai city, and the results show that both the industry structure and development intensity affect the urban energy efficiency, and there seems to be an optimal FAR value. This approach could be applied to compare the energy efficiency of any urban area with similar scales.
