Abstract: Nanowires have attracted much attention for their applications to biosensors, nanolasers, and so on. Manipulation of nanowires is indispensable for constructing these micro/nano devices. Here we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new optical manipulation method of a metallic nanowire using an optical vortex. In our method, a metallic nanowire can be grasped by the optical repulsive force and rotated by the total angular momentum of an optical vortex. In addition, the nanowire can be aligned in any direction by high-speed switching of helical phase shift, and translated to the desired position by moving the stage. The manipulation technique using an optical vortex will be a powerful tool for manipulating and assembling various kinds of nanowires.
