Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia. It is thought that paraoxonase and arylesterase (PON1) alteration may have a possible role in the risk of developing Alzheimer disease (AD), therefore this study aimed to assess serum PON1 (paraoxonase/arylesterase) activity of patients with AD in Gorgan, Iran. Materials and Methods fifty patients with AD, who were referred to an elderly nursing home in Gorgan, were studied, along with 50 healthy control subjects. Results The mean paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were significantly lower in patient with AD compared with the control group (p 70 years than control subjects in both genders (p< 0.001). The mean arylesterase / paraoxonase ratio was significantly higher in the ages of <70 in both genders (p< 0.05). Conclusion Many people suffer from Alzheimer disease. Development of Alzheimer disease in many people may different in some area of the world. Many conditions may have a role in onset of Alzheimer disease. Age and gender may play an important role for late or early-onset of Alzheimer disease. Further studies are necessary to discuss about the mechanism of the decrease in PON1 activity in humans.
