Abstract: Within the last decade, much attention has been paid to the impacts of mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and burnout among professional counselors.Usually, these factors have either been studied individually or in dyads. However, previous studies seem to indicate an interrelationship between the three factors.Although these factors have been studied among professional counselors, little is known about the association of mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and burnout among counselors-in-training.The purpose of this study was to examine the association of mindfulness and emotional intelligence to burnout among counselors-in-training.In addition, this study examined additional factors (e.g., length of time in internship, relationship with supervisor) that may be related to burnout.Three hundred eighty participants completed a demographic questionnaire, the Maslach Burnout Inventory -Human Services Survey, the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, and the Brief Emotional Intelligence Survey.Canonical correlation, linear regression, and multivariate analysis of variance were utilized to analyze the data. The results indicated that counselors-in-training who reported higher scores of mindfulness and emotional intelligence reported lower burnout scores. No statistically significant relationship was found between the amount of time spent engaged in mindfulness activities per week and burnout.Post-hoc analyses found no statistically significant relationship between length of time in internship and burnout. However, statistical evidence shows that the quality of x LIST OF TABLESTable Page Frequency Distributions for Demographic Variables ……………………….65 Categorization of MBI-HSS Scores: Range of Experienced Burnout ……… 72 Comparison of MBI-HSS Sample Mean Scores to Normative Data ……….. 86 Frequency Distributions of Predictor and Criterion Variables ……………... 87 Canonical Correlation Results ……………………………………………… 89 Results of Canonical Correlation Analysis between Mindfulness, Emotional Intelligence, and Burnout …………………………………………………… 91 Means and Standard Deviations for MBI-HSS Emotional Exhaustion Subscale and Time Engaged in Mindfulness per Week …………………….. 94 Means and Standard Deviations for MBI-HSS Depersonalization Subscale and Time Engaged in Mindfulness per Week……………………... 94 Means and Standard Deviations for MBI-HSS Personal Accomplishment Subscale and Time Engaged in Mindfulness per Week……………………... 94 Means and Standard Deviations for MBI-HSS Emotional Exhaustion Subscale and Relationship with Supervisor ………………………………… 99 Means and Standard Deviations for MBI-HSS Depersonalization Subscale and Relationship with Supervisor ……………………………….. 100 Means and Standard Deviations for MBI-HSS Personal Accomplishment Subscale and Relationship with Supervisor ………………………………..
