Characterization of the bluefin tuna spawing habitat off the Balearic Archipelago in relation to the key hydrographic features and associated environmental conditions.

Year: 2004
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: 1SUMMARY The present document reviews the results of the yearly TUNIBAL surveys carried out off the Balearic archipelago from the 2001-2003 bluefin tuna spawning seasons. Bluefin larval abundance show a clear relationship with the temperature regime of surface water masses (24o25oC) and the nature of the water masses, being mainly spread over inflowing Atlantic waters or in their transition mixing zone of Mediterranean waters. The spawning habitat of bluefin also shows a tendency towards particular mesoscale hydrographic structures, such as, fronts and gyres. Information on the hydrographic conditions observed in each survey is provided, as well as, complementary information on the microzooplankton abundance measured by its dry weight and protein is also provided.
