Abstract: Inflammation, especially Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs), are playing an important role in atherosclerosis. Double knockout of Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) and TLR 9 leaded to an exacerbation of lesion severity with an increased plaque size, lipid content, accumulation of macrophages and dendritic cells, while the collagen content was reduced. The depletion of CD4+ cells in ApoE-/-:TLR9-/- mice, resulted in a significant reduction of plaque. Furthermore, treatment of ApoE-/- mice with a TLR 9 agonist led to a reduction in lesion severity.
