Imaging Tools in Human Research
Year: 2016
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: Image-guided interventions have been applied in clinical practice and research for decades, starting with X-ray fluoroscopy to guide catheter placements in angiography and ultrasound to guide placement of needles and devices. More recently more and more sophisticated imaging modalities have migrated out of their traditional roles and into operating and procedure rooms. The impetus for this is the power of these tools to image specific features of a given disease that are essential for the safe and effective delivery of therapy. Molecular imaging has demonstrated new and exciting insights into many diseases in vivo, and the changes that result from therapy can now be monitored in real time. In this era of “precision” medicine molecular image-guided interventions allow real personalized and precise treatment using an imaging phenotype–based approach.
