Abstract: The banana, one of the most favorite fruits, being the fourth-most important food crop in the world is a staple food and export commodity. Peels are the major by-products of all fruits and vegetables obtained during processing; some studies show that these are good sources of polyphenols, carotenoids and other bioactive compounds, which possess various beneficial effects on human health. Banana peel, being a key source of many functionally important bioactive compounds, is still underutilized and very little scientific effort has been put into identifying its functionality in terms of application to food and nutraceuticals. Scanning electron microscopic analysis demonstrated the microporous structure of the material, while energy dispersive X-ray analysis confirmed the sorption of cadmium on banana peel. Therefore, the use of banana peel in removal of cadmium ions from environmental and industrial wastewater samples will have the advantages of low cost, rapid attainment of phase equilibration and high sorption capacity values.
