The effect of oral and transdermal creatine supplementation on the arterial stiffness and blood pressure response to high intensity resistance exercise

Abstract: This thesis is an investigation of the effect of oral and transdermal creatine supplementation on the blood pressure and central and peripheral arterial stiffness (PWV) response following acute resistance exercise of 5 sets of 15 max single leg knee extensions. Sixty participants were randomized to 3 oral supplementation groups; control, creatine and placebo, and each leg was randomized into transdermal creatine or placebo. A significant increase in SBP, MAP and cfPWV (p<0.001) was found immediately following exercise, returning to baseline by 20 minutes post-exercise. A significant decrease in peripheral PWV was found at 25 minutes post-exercise (p<0.001). When cfPWV was corrected for MAP, no significant response was found. Following 7 days of supplementation, no difference in response of SBP, MAP, cfPWV or peripheral PWV was found between groups. Creatine supplementation through both oral and transdermal administration does not influence cardiovascular response to high intensity resistance exercise.
