Preliminary Thoughts on Burmese Modes
Year: 1975
Type: article
Abstract: Little precise written information exists concerning the theory of Burmese music. Upon closely investigating the present performance practice of Burmese musicians, however, it becomes apparent that a rather complex orally transmitted theory of the music exists. It is never taught as theory per se, but the knowledge is acquired as the musician adds one composition after another to his repertoire. It is therefore, the vast body of Burmese music as it is performed today that defines theory.
