OP15.09: Development of a video ultrasound simulator in Spanish language for teaching ultrasound technology
Year: 2016
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Ultrasound is a fundamental tool in the study of normal and pathological pregnancy. The scan is done, in the vast majority of cases, by medical personnel who do not understand the physics of sound nor the use of the different options available in the ultrasound scanners to optimise images to reach appropriated conclusions. In addition, most of the information related to technological concepts comes in English. Our goal was to design a Spanish language simulator that serves as a didactic tool for teaching technological concepts of ultrasound to medical personnel. Based on the physical aspects of ultrasound scanner, and using Adobe Flash, we developed an user interface, which was linked to other secondary screens, videos and animations for each of the topics of interest, such as generalities of sounds, operation of the transducers, frequency, modes B, M, Doppler, colour Doppler, power Doppler, gain, power, frame rate, depth, zoom, line numbers, persistence, frequency repetition of pulse, region of interest, base line, etc. We achieved a video simulator used in demonstrations on laptops. When students go through the user interface, the activation of each command moves to a second interface which shows several options. One of them is a brief video with voices and animations describing the physical principles of this feature. Another possibility option is to simulate that feature. For example, if a focus is activated, it increases or decreases the focus number or position, showing changes in the quality of the image and the effects on frame rate. This simulator was also installed on open educational platforms, and integrated for teaching scenarios on b-learning courses with students from all over the country. The simulator received 95% of satisfaction. This Spanish language video-simulator meets the proposed ultrasound machine realism, adding the possibility to visit any function of the keyboard. Also, it was positively as a didactic tool for teaching scenarios.
