Préparation à la naissance et à la parentalité pour les pères : de l’intérêt des groupes spécifiques aux pères
Year: 2017
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Our work is motivated by the observation that soon-to-be fathers find the process of pregnancy difficult and are sometimes in need of help. Paternal preparation groups work to respond to this need. In an effort to understand their experiences, we conduct a qualitative, multicentric study in which we conduct ten open-ended interviews with fathers who participated in such a group during their spouse’s pregnancy. The fathers do not begin the programs with specific needs or expectation but find them helpful as a place to learn support techniques, gain more information about pregnancy and childbirth, to be reassured of their own understanding and to feel less lonely. Some of the fathers, however, regret not having time to share their personal experiences of the process with those who would understand them the best. In conclusion, participation in such a paternal support group seems to have a generally positive effect on the ‘future fatherhood’ of the men interviewed for this study. In the future it would be interesting to expand the scope of the interviews with hope of generalizing our findings.
