Occurrence of the postlarvae of bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, in the Japan Sea.
Year: 1974
Type: article
Abstract: On August 18-19th, 1972, three postlarval specimens referable to T. thynnus were collected from the waters off Niigata (Fig. 1). From their small size (5.91-9.00 mm in SL) and locality of capture, they were considered to be spawned within the Japan Sea. Perhaps, this represents the first record of possible spawning as well as larval collection of the bluefin tuna in the Japan Sea. Present case is quite unique in that larval occurrence is almost one month late for the previous records in the Pacific (almost exclusively restricted to May and June). It is supposed that sea condition in 1972, which was characterized by the predominance of the unusual organisms of warm water origin, was most responsible for the successful spawning of this oceanic fish. Finally, it is concluded that such is a very rare phenomenon, and probably makes no significant contribution to the stock of this fish.
