Predicting Age at Menarche from Changes in Linear Growth vs. Body Fat

Year: 2016
Type: preprint
Abstract: Pubertal onset and progression vary widely across human populations, though the causes of this variation are debated. Both skeletal growth and adiposity exhibit rapid growth during adolescence that is mediated by energy availability, and both have been proposed to moderate pubertal development. We argue that reproductive maturation should be more attuned to skeletal growth than adiposity, as the former is a better indicator of long-term nutritional conditions during childhood than is adiposity, and is correlated with pelvic growth. We will test the relative strength of changes in height vs. anthropometric markers of body fat in predicting age at menarche using data collected from Qom females in 2011-2015. The project overview, data files, and description of hypotheses, pre-processing steps, and data analysis protocol are included with this registration.
