Abstract: Key Points SCD patients with a recent VOC episode have lower frequencies and numbers of HO-1hi patrolling monocytes. Heme-driven SCD vaso-occlusion is exacerbated in mice lacking patrolling monocytes and reversed following patrolling monocyte transfer.
