Abstract: The origin of recombination is usually considered as by-product of evolution of another processes of the DNA metabolism, for example repair. In the paper, arguments are adduced in favour of the recombination having risen as the necessary element of the DNA metabolism and, consequently, existence of living things. An approach to analysis of the recombination mechanism evolution which permits to distinguish two steps, the recombination origin and the recombination improvement, is proposed. When considering the first step, an uncertainty of modern classification of recombination \n(general, site-specific and illegitimate ones) is pointed out and its proposed to distinguish recombination types according to their mechanisms — the simple covalent recombination, the recombination by adhesive ends, and the recombination by branched molecule transformation (Holliday recombination). When considering the second step, it is pointed out that the recombination improvement occurred owing to changings of the genetic material organization, the necessity in regulation of the recombination frequencies and the acquisition of novel functions for recombination, i. e. rather owing to changings of recombination preconditions than the process of the recombinant molecule formation \nitself.
