Abstract: INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE:The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether a-blockers improve symptoms and quality of life in patients with double J ureteric stents.METHODS: Fifty-seven patients with an indwelled double J ureteric stent were randomized into two groups; Group A included 22 patients who received 10 mg of alfuzosin daily for as long as the stent remained in place.Group B consisted of 35 patients who did not receive an a-blocker.A questionnaire comprising LUTS, stent-associated pain, general health status and sexual function was completed 4 weeks after stent insertion.Chi-Square and t-test were used to analyze the results.RESULTS: Mean Urinary Symptom Index was 22.64 (range 12-29) and 27.94 (range 18-41 ) for patients in group A and B, respectively (p= 0.002).Overall, the prevalence of pain was lower in study group A (8/22 patients; 36.4%)compared to study group B (23/35 patient~; 65.7% )(p= 0.03).However, reduced pain severity amongst patients receiving a-blocker was not statistically verified.Mean Pain Index was 13.75 (range 8-20) and 16.52 (range 11-24) in groups A and B respectively (p= O.LOl ).General Health Index was higher amongst patients receiving alfuzosin (mean index group A 8.36; group B 11.86, p< O.OOl).Ten patients in group A and 19 patients in Group B reported sexually active with the mean Sexual Scores being 2.00 (range 2-2) and 3.00 (range 2-5), respectively (p= O.OOl) CONCLUSIONS: A-blocker administration following ureteric stent insertion improves LUTS and decreases stent-associated pain.Sexual function and general health is better preserved in these patients.
