Abstract: UROLOGy® enhancement of laparoscopic partial nephrectomies captured by the conventional visible light camera used in laparoscopic systems.METHODS: Select video images before and after renal arterial clamping from laparoscopic partial nephrectomies were analyzed. The spectrum of oxyhemoglobin is red-shifted relative to the spectrum of deoxyhemoglobin.By subtracting the red CCD response from the blue CCD response, the images were enhanced to compare renal tissue before and after arterial clamping. These responses were overlaid onto laparoscopic images.RESULTS: In each of the laparoscopic partial nephrectomies, the renal vessels were easily differentiated (Figure 2).The vein had an average region of interest (ROI) of 20.30±4.95versus 59.30±9.91 in the artery.Mean red saturation values for renal regions of interest were calculated using a designed computer software, 73.56 ± 6.43, 37.62 ± 12.31' 28.98 ± 9.89, 23.45 ± 11.15, 56.01 ± 5.02, 53.00 ± 11.31' 73.61 ± 7.97, and 67.58 ± 12.86, A-H respectively (Figure 1).CONCLUSIONS: 3-CCD cameras may afford urologic surgeons the ability to differentiate vascular structures as well as detect changes in renal oxygenation during laparoscopic renal surgery.
