Global advocacy: civil society engagement of government on alternatives to immigration detention
Year: 2017
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: There is a growing global movement of civil society organizations seeking to engage governments on “alternatives to detention.” The author, a leading member of this campaign, explores the tensions at play between human rights standards, political and public opinion, and the pragmatics of operationalizing entry and exit systems to highlight advocacy strategies that have proved effective in promoting non-detention models. Focusing on alternatives in a range of political and migration contexts, the chapter draws from comparative case studies and the experiences, challenges and successes of the International Detention Coalition (IDC) and its members.
