Preface: Biomaterials Science and Engineering in China Special Issue

Year: 2018
Type: editorial
Abstract: It is intended to express the gratitude of the journal's editors for the quantity and quality of submissions that we are receiving from China. The number of articles published in the journal by authors from China is the second-highest among all the published countries and almost doubled from Q1 2017 to Q1 2018.This reflects the remarkable increase in research infrastructure and support over the past few decades, along with the high quality of the research being conducted.Even though gold teeth and wood tools for bone repair can be dated back to thousands of years in ancient China,, contemporary biomaterials research did not start until the beginning of the 1970s in China.Since then, Chinese biomaterials research has developed rapidly. The total funding for the R&D of biomaterials has increased dramatically from 1990 to 2017, which mainly comes from Ministry of Science and Technology in China, National Natural Science Foundation of China, local government and industries. In 2017, there were about 3000 registered Chinese delegates of the National Biomaterials Congress of China held in Jiangxi Province. All these facts reflect that R&D of biomaterials in China is well established. This special issue includes eight research articles that focus on the development of nanomedicines for cancer, diabetes, and immune system diseases.1-8 Four articles highlight the detection and characterization methods for investigation of protease biomarkers, tumor cells, and dynamic covalent bonds.9-12 Another four articles emphasize the design of scaffold and membrane biomaterials for applications including cartilage regeneration, antithrombosis, abdominal hernia treatment, and postsurgery antiadhesion.13-16 This special issue also contains a review article discussing the applications of nearinfrared light-triggered polymeric nanomicelles in cancer therapy and imaging.17 Taken together, this special issue provides a glimpse of some of the best biomaterials science and engineering research within China. We hope this special issue will continue to stimulate the advancement of this promising direction and lead the way to more original concepts and evolutionary ideas around the globe.
