Abstract: Dyslexia represents a disorder of linguistic systems in the brain, with evidence pointing to a deficit in phonologic processing as the most consistent finding in children and adults with dyslexia. Using functional MR imaging, it has become possible to localize the component processes used in word identification: orthography, phonology, and lexical-semantic processing. Activation of the inferior frontal gyrus region during performance of a rhyming task may provide a neural signature for phonologic processing, the core cognitive component in reading and dyslexia.
