Abstract: The concept of self-esteem defines to which extent an individual is happy or proud of oneself. It has previously been suggested that an individual's self-esteem can be obtained through his or her feats and achievements. Such achievements have become essential in today's society since they partly give us a basic security in the form of money, but it can also be a way to show ourselves that we are good enough. The purpose of this literature review was to investigate the causal relationship between self-esteem and academic achievement. Do individuals with low self-esteem have better academic achievements than those with higher self-esteem? Do individuals’ academic achievements affect their self-esteem? The results showed that low self-esteem cannot be proved to lead to better academic achievements. However, it is possible to assert that an individual's academic achievement affects his or her self-esteem, but the results are ambiguous. In fact, most scientists are unsure of the causal direction of the relationship between self-esteem and academic achievement. Because of this uncertainty, one should look further at how significant results between these variables actually should be interpreted. Keywords: self-esteem, academic achievement, students, perfectionism, success
