Year: 2018
Type: article
Abstract: In the United States, prostate cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, representing 19% of all newly reported cancers in men-an estimated 164,690 patients in 2018. 1 It is also the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men, with an estimated 39,430deaths in 2018. 1 For these reasons, there is great interest in maintaining the highest cancer care quality and identifying optimal treatment, while considering such factors as disease stage, risk, volume, age, and performance status. The purpose of the ASCO guideline is to endorse the American Urological Association (AUA), American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), and the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) guideline on clinically localized prostate cancer that was publishedonline in 2017 [available athttp:// www.auanet.org/guidelines/clinically- localized-prostate-cancer-new-(aua/astro/ suo-guideline-2017)] and in print in 2018.2-4 The ASCO endorsement reinforces the recommendations offered in the AUA, ASTRO, and SUO guideline on clinically localized prostate cancer and gratefully acknowledges the effort put forth by those three organizations to produce an evidence-based guideline informing practitioners who care for patients with clinically localized prostate cancer.Additional information is available at www.asco. org/genitourinary-cancer-guidelines.
