Tourette's Syndrome: A Failure of Subcortical Inhibition

Year: 1998
Type: article
Abstract: Subject Compulsions, stereotypies, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and aggression are all broad classes of behavioral problems that have been attributed to the failed inhibition of normal brain processes. The tics of Tourette syndrome (TS) are one class of semi-compulsory behavior that can be rapidly and voluntarily suppressed for brief durations, making them an attractive model for the study of impulse control in functional imaging paradigms.
