The Benefits and Challenges of Technology for Older Adults: Lessons From Create

Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Technology is integrated into most aspects of life and changing how we work, play, communicate, manage finances, and perform other routine activities. It is also increasingly being used within healthcare. Interacting with technology is not only a necessity for older people but also affords potential benefits to older adults in terms of health management, well-being, safety/security, and engagement. Despite increases in technology uptake among older people and advances in design, many aging adults confront challenges when attempting to access or use technology systems. Drawing from research conducted by the Center for Research and Education on Aging and Technology Enhancement (CREATE), this symposium will discuss the benefits and challenges of technology for older adults in everyday life domains. Each presentation will also provide examples of potential design solutions. S. Czaja will present a conceptual framework to illustrate the interplay between aging adults and technology and will also discuss current challenges within the healthcare domain. W. Boot will focus on design to support older adults’ engagement in leisure activities, citing examples related to digital games. N. Charness will focus on transportation and discuss technologies such as advanced driver systems and autonomous vehicles. W. Rogers will discuss the potential of technologies, such as digital home assistants and healthcare monitoring, in helping to meet the challenges of aging in place. J. Sharit will focus on the workplace and the potential benefits and challenges of workplace technologies for older workers. D. Plude will lead a discussion of these issues and outline areas for future research.
