Designing Products With Older Adults: a Multidisciplinary Age-friendly University (afu) Program
Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: InnoVenture Weekend at FSU, an AFU member institution, was a joint effort of the Institute for Successful Longevity (ISL), the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, and the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship. ISL worked with the organizing committee to set aging as the theme for the product design and business pitch event. ISL queried its participant registry (1500+ senior volunteers), asking registrants to identify product needs for seniors. After 10 themes were identified and product statements written, ISL invited seniors who generated the selected ideas to serve as mentors to student design teams. Student feedback indicated that they were highly appreciative of the guidance as they drew up product design solutions to the problems. Seniors reported positive interactions with students. I will discuss how the program was structured and lessons learned in light of AFU principles that call for greater attention to aging issues and engaging older adults in program development.
