Aging and Leisure Activities: Opportunities and Design Challenges
Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: With respect to designing for aging, a great deal of attention has been focused on design to support the performance of important everyday activities such as transportation, healthcare, and work. Design to support leisure activities, however, should not be neglected as these activities can help reduce stress, promote emotional and physical health, and may also help maintain cognitive abilities. This talk will focus on design to support older adults’ engagement in leisure activities, citing specific examples related to the design of digital games for entertainment. Studies will be presented that examine older adults’ game use and barriers to use over an extended period of time, as well as studies of older adults’ game preferences. This talk will conclude by reviewing guidelines for the design of technology to support some of the most frequent leisure activities that older adults engage in, and activities that they report enjoying most.
