Poor Sleep Health Mediates the Association Between Older Men’s Arthritis and Systemic Inflammation
Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: We examined the association of arthritis with sleep health in older men, and whether sleep health mediates the associations of arthritis with systemic inflammation. Data came from 2,560 community-dwelling older men. Participants reported whether they had osteoarthritis (OA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We constructed sleep health index (self-reported sleep quality, sleepiness; actigraphy-assessed wake-after-sleep-onset, sleep duration, and napping, Range=0–5) and binary indicators of elevated inflammation using C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Analyses adjusted for age, sleep disorders, comorbidities, BMI, smoking status, and relevant medication use. Older men with OA or RA had poorer sleep health. Poorer sleep health was associated with 16%-15% higher risk of elevated CRP and 12%-11% higher risk of elevated IL-6, respectively, after controlling separately for OA or RA. The associations of OA or RA with inflammation were mediated by poorer sleep health. Promoting sleep health may reduce associations between older men’s arthritis and high systemic inflammation.
