Changing Job Demands and Older Workers

Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Older adults comprise a growing portion of today’s workplace with an increasing number of workers aged 75+. Today’s work environment requires that workers of all ages need to interact with a variety of technologies. Current technologies are reshaping work processes, job content, work settings, communication strategies, and the delivery of training. Technology-based jobs place an emphasis on cognitive skills, which can be challenging for older workers given age-related changes in cognition. The constant evolution of technology also requires that workers of all ages need to continue to engage in training to prevent skill obsolescence. This presentation will discuss the potential implications of age-related changes in perceptual, cognitive, and psychomotor functioning that have relevance to work activities. Findings from research examining performance of older adults on technology-based jobs will be presented. In addition, examples will be provided on strategies to accommodate an aging workforce and maximize the productivity of aging workers.
