Together, We Move: a Multi-component Intervention to Increase Physical Activity for Ethnic Minority Older Adults
Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: This pilot study evaluates if a culturally specific walking program enhanced with motivational prompts and peer interactions delivered through a mobile application, WeChat, improves physical activity and social engagement for Chinese older adults. Using community engaged research methods, we will recruit 50 older Chinese adults to a randomized controlled trial testing whether a cognitive behavioral intervention delivered via WeChat plus a culturally adapted walking program, improves social engagement and physical activity compared to a culturally adapted walking program alone. Linear mixed effects and latent growth curves will be used to model rates and patterns of change between both groups. These findings will provide information about the applicability of mobile technology in supporting improved physical activity and social engagement among older Chinese, and add valuable insight on contextual factors influencing application effectiveness, which will inform the potential for adoption and scale.
