Assessing Multimorbidity: From Challenges to Solutions
Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: With the growing aging population, although the incidence and prevalence of multimorbidity(MM) have surged, often ignored by traditional medicine. Older patients with MM are at high risk for iatrogenesis, disability, and mortality. Despite intense research and many indexes of MM evaluated in the literature, there is still no consensus on the best measure of MM to be used whether as an outcome or a risk factor in epidemiological and clinical research. The goal of this symposium is to discuss MM instruments and from well-characterized epidemiological studies discuss the advantages and limitations. The final goal is to identify research gaps in defining MM that should be addressed in future research. Marcel Salive will open the symposium addressing “Multimorbidity and matching the instrument and purposes: Challenges, pitfalls, and gaps.” Shabnam Salimi will discuss a novel tool developed from clinical data collected in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study participants, and present data supporting the notion that MM is a marker of accelerated aging. Walter Rocca will present “Multimorbidity in Population Studies: the Rochester Epidemiology Project” and summarize recent work on MM in a defined population. He will discuss the impact of specific combinations of conditions (dyads) on mortality, and provide an example indicating MM as a clinical marker of accelerated aging in a cohort study. After summarizing the main points discussed in the symposium, Luigi Ferrucci will discuss age-related underlying mechanisms that potentially explain the relationship between aging and MM and point to roadblocks that impede progress in this critical field.
