Multidimensional Sleep Health: a Conceptual Overview

Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Good sleep is essential to good health, and poor sleep is associated with adverse health outcomes. Both sleep disorders and sleep characteristics are associated with poor health outcomes. For example, short and long sleep duration are associated obesity and mortality. However, our sleep is characterized by more than simply its duration. Sleep quality, efficiency, timing, regularity, and daytime sleepiness are also associated with adverse health outcomes. Furthermore, each of these characteristics is simultaneously present in all individuals. This fact leads to several important questions: Can we define multidimensional sleep health conceptually and psychometrically? Is multidimensional sleep health more strongly related to health outcomes than single measures of sleep? How do we best analyze data from a multidimensional sleep health perspective? Dr. Buysse will present an overview of the sleep health construct, introduce these important questions, and provide examples supporting the validity and utility of examining multivariable sleep health in aging.
