Multimorbidity in Population Studies: the Rochester Epidemiology Project

Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Some recent work on on the prevalence and incidence of multimorbidity in a defined population will be reported. We defined multimorbidity using the list of 20 conditions recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) with some modifications. We reported the differences by age, sex, and race/ethnicity for both prevalence and incidence. The most common combination of conditions (dyads) and the impact of specific combinations of conditions (dyads) on mortality will be discussed. Finally, an example of the use of multimorbidity as a clinical marker of accelerated aging is bilateral oophorectomy that was found associated with an accelerated accumulation of chronic conditions. This is from a cohort study to test the association of bilateral oophorectomy in premenopausal women with accelerated aging. In another study by other investigators, bilateral oophorectomy was found associated with higher levels of DNA methylation (epigenetic clock).
