Technology to Support Aging in Place

Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: The term “aging-in-place” has become common in everyday language but what exactly does it mean? People used to think that they would want to continue to live in the family home forever – without ever having to relocate. However, changing norms for mobility and increasing options for living communities are likely going to have an influence. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aging-in-place is: “The ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.” Technology has much potential to support these goals through digital home assistants, health care monitoring, self-management of wellness, social engagement – in general through support of daily activities that influence quality of life. Challenges that older adults experience in these areas can be supported through technology. We will provide examples to illustrate how aging-in-place challenges can be mitigated with technology supports.
