Enrgise: Screening Methods, Recruitment Results and Baseline Characteristics

Year: 2018
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: ENRGISE screening began in March 2016. Of those who responded to the recruitment efforts, 83% responded to mass mailings. Of the 5424 telephone screens completed, 2011 (37%) were eligible for further screening. Of the 1305 initial screening visits (SV1), 1087 subjects had slow gait speed (<1m/sec) and had IL-6 measured. Of these, 701 (64%) had elevated IL-6 levels (2.3–3.0 pg/ml) and were eligible for second SV (SV2). Of the 582 SV2 visits, 335 (57.6%) were eligible to be randomized. A total of 289 subjects (96% of goal) were randomized: 180 (240%) in the omega-3 fish oil arm; 43 (57%) in the Losartan arm and 66 (44%) in the combination. The cost of recruitment per randomized subject was $1782. The average age and usual pace gait speed were 78.3 years and 0.82 m/sec; 78% of subjects were White. These results will inform the design of future trials of older, frail individuals.
