Microbes and Their Metabolites Correlate with Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Outcomes?
Year: 2018
Type: article
Abstract: The process of allogeneic (allo-) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) causes loss of diversity and alters the composition of intestinal microbiota by antibiotic treatment and the development of acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) [1]. Conversely, intestinal microbiota has been shown to modulate post–allo-HSCT outcomes including severity and mortality from aGVHD, bloodstream infections, overall survival, and relapse [2–5]. The mechanisms underpinning these effects on allo-HSCT clinical outcomes could involve alterations in the quality and quantity of microbial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that accompany changes in the bacterial composition [6].
