Abstract: Insulated rail joints, are a safety critical part of track signalling systems, which are used extensively in rail networks worldwide. However, these joints are failure prone, and susceptible to cracking and fracture, which has resulted in a number of notable accidents in the past, and major cost to industry. This thesis investigates the structural behaviour of these joints, via analytical modelling and field testing in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The ultimate goals of this work are to reduce maintenance and outage costs, and, more importantly, improve safety for operators and passengers.
