Abstract: Microalgae were the basis of life on the planet, and for\ncenturies have been used as a food source in artisanal systems.\nHowever, only recently have industrial processes been\ndeveloped to produce them. This is possible thanks to improved\nknowledge of these microorganisms, the factors that\ndetermine their growth, and the photobioreactors necessary\nfor their production. The main applications of microalgae\nare related to direct human consumption, but recent years\nhave seen the emergence of a wide range of new applications\nrelated to improving the sustainability of certain processes,\nsuch as agricultural and livestock production, waste water\ntreatment, and even biofuel production. The large-scale use\nof microalgae is therefore considered to contribute to the green\nrevolution for the sustainability of humankind. This chapter\nanalyses the principal applications of microalgae and how\nthese microorganisms can contribute to developing the bioeconomy,\nimproving the sustainability of economic activities.\nThe latest improvements in technology and applications are\nreviewed, as are the remaining obstacles in the industrial exploitation\nof these microorganisms.
