Visualizing Communication Behaviors and Breakdowns in Caregiver and Person With Dementia Dyads

Year: 2018
Type: article
Abstract: Providing evidence-based support to caregivers has become an ever-increasing need as the numbers of persons with dementia continues to climb. Identifying communication behaviors that improve interactions by decreasing communication breakdowns provides caregivers with concrete strategies. These strategies have the potential to support caregiving, facilitate continued connection, and positively impact the quality of life for both the caregiver and the person with dementia (PWD). Kindell ‘s et al. (2017) review found that studies examining spontaneous communication and face-to-face interactions between people with dementia and their family caregivers are surprisingly rare; however, as technology advances the ability to capture spontaneous interactions has improved. The current study examines the feasibility of analyzing communication in videos captured during the FamTechCare study, testing telehealth technology and in-home caregiving support (K.Williams et al., 2018). Five test videos were randomly selected and communication between caregivers and care recipients was coded using the Verbal and Nonverbal Interaction Scale CG&CR (C.Williams et al., 2017, 2012) and an adapted version of Oranges’ (1996, 1998) conversational repair coding scheme. Graphic displays provide visualizations of sequential relationships between specific caregiver and PWD communication behaviors and communication breakdowns and repairs. Results support feasibility of sequential analysis with remaining FamTechCare videos and further hypothesis testing on a large scale.
