Nurse Faculty Mentoring of Students to Optimize Student Success: A Basic Qualitative Study

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: • What is currently known about this topic. • Mentoring can be used to help someone grow and develop in a variety of ways. Generally, it is a pairing of a more experienced person with a less experienced person to help the person grow and develop. Mentoring is evidence-based strategy/tool/technique that is well established in the literature and can be applied to almost any field. What the paper adds to the existing knowledge. • What the paper adds to the existing knowledge • There is a dearth of literature discussing faculty mentoring of students from a qualitative perspective within the domain of prelicensure nursing education and working from one single evidence-based definition. This study adds to the professional body of knowledge by capturing perspectives and mentoring practices of prelicensure nursing faculty from across the US who self-identified as mentors and use the technique of mentorship which they believe help their students by reducing attrition, increasing persistence to graduation, and passing NCLEX. • How the information in your manuscript can be applied to practice. • The literature supports mentoring as an educational strategy in which faculty members can engage to help students succeed. Faculty provided perspectives of ways they mentor students by developing relationships with students, role modeling, and assisting them with both academic and psychosocial needs. The findings of this study describe the application of specific and practical mentoring practices, strategies, and techniques that nursing faculty can use when mentoring prelicensure nursing students in schools of nursing across the country, with the aim of helping students be successful in nursing school and beyond. The demand for practicing registered nurses outweighs the supply, resulting in a nursing shortage. Many nursing schools grapple with high attrition and low NCLEX pass rates. Mentoring is an evidence-based strategy used in post-secondary education to help students persist to graduation and pass NCLEX, which is the licensing exam in the United States. Aim: Current literature has identified a need for more research in the area of mentoring including mentoring in RN prelicensure nursing education. Basic qualitative methodology, using semi-structured interviews, was utilized to generate an understanding of the nursing faculty mentoring role. Themes included (a) developing relationships , (b) addressing psychosocial needs - time, listening, and support, self-esteem/self-confidence (c) addressing academic needs - helping students succeed in the classroom and the clinical role, and (d) role modeling . The findings support the application of mentoring practices in schools of nursing across the country with the aim of helping students succeed in nursing school and pass the licensure examinations.
