Abstract: On behalf of the entire Editorial and Management Teams of Chemical Biology & Drug Design (CB&DD), I wish to thank all authors, reviewers and each of you who share with us a commitment to advancing innovative science, technology and medicine by promoting multidisciplinary chemical biology and drug design. In this Editorial, I am pleased to give an update on the journal whilst it passes through its fifth year as an emerging premier scientific journal. And, in following a tradition of the past four years, I wish to share a few thoughts on the topic of transition, scholarship and faith in special recognition of progress with CB&DD as well as my optimistic and enthusiastic commitment to establish the framework of a World Society for Chemical Biology and Drug Design. CB&DD has expanded its momentum, growth and impact towards establishing its global recognition as a rising star in the proverbial galaxy of journals contributing to scholarship in science, medicine and technology. As strategically envisaged from its inception, the integrated focus on both chemical biology and drug design has created a unique personality for CB&DD. The journal will sustain a commitment to authors relative to a comprehensive scope of relevant topics for manuscript submission, including: (i) protein, peptide, peptidomimetic, nucleic acid, lipids, carbohydrate and natural product chemical biology and drug design; (ii) receptor agonist/antagonist, protease substrate/inhibitor, and signal transduction modulator chemical biology and drug design; (iii) small-molecule diversity and synthetic methods important to investigate chemical space relationships to drug discovery; (iv) structure-based drug design, molecular modeling, virtual screening and related in silico chemoinformatics technologies; (v) NMR, X-ray crystallography, calorimetry and related biophysical technologies; (vi) therapeutic target proteomics, chemical genomics and molecular screening technologies; (vii) emerging chemical, biological and drug design concepts of significance to pharmacology, ADMET and drug delivery; and (viii) novel proof-of-concept ligands and breakthrough medicines. The Editorial Team of CB&DD as well as an increasing number of ad hoc referees throughout the world has contributed to the high standards of the journal. I’m very grateful to those authors who have entrusted CB&DD for the publication of their Research Articles, Research Letters, Perspectives, Reviews, Science Philosophy, Medicine Pipeline and Technology Platform manuscripts. Finally, two special thematic issues of CB&DD are being organized for future publication in 2011—namely, ‘Molecular Armamentarium of Chemical and Biological Medicines for the War on Disease’ and ‘Innovative Technologies for Drug Design, Molecular Informatics and Biophysical Analysis’. On further reflection to my accepting the appointment of Editor-in-Chief of CB&DD now more than five years ago, my vision for the journal has been fulfilled with respect to embracing the quintessence of chemical biology and drug design. As to my promise of commitment to CB&DD in the inaugural issue (January 2006)—‘Unquestionably, my career in drug discovery is reflected by a pursuit of smart chemistry tackling complex biology by way of inventive drug design. It is such a quest for knowledge and passion for life that will establish the multidisciplinary framework of Chemical Biology & Drug Design as well as its dedication to the advancement of innovative science, technology and medicine.’—I remain extremely grateful and welcome outstanding manuscripts from academic, industrial and government institutions throughout the world. ‘Transition’, ‘scholarship’, and ‘faith’ remain to be dynamic descriptors of CB&DD as it takes strategic steps towards bridging, leveraging and highlighting the multidisciplinary fields of chemical biology and drug design. In terms of transition, I’m hopeful that 2011 will bring forth a major milestone for the journal to become the cornerstone of a World Society for Chemical Biology and Drug Design. As for scholarship, the journal will seek opportunities to provide witness of academic, industrial and government institutions that are contributing to significant advances in chemical biology and drug design by way of CB&DD’s special sections on Who’s Who in Chemical Biology and Drug Design, R&D Spotlight and R&D Tutorial. And, with respect to faith, I must humbly admit that trust, conviction and resolve in my role as CB&DD Editor-in-Chief have sustained me over the past five years and more than 700 manuscripts published to date. Such has further inspired my thoughts on virtuous leadership, knowledge, reverence, truth, good works and a passion for life as described in a series of Words of Wisdom articles. As closing remarks, I reiterate my gratitude to my CB&DD Editorial and Management teams for a fifth successful year towards achieving the utmost quality and respect within the context of science, technology and medicine. I wish to acknowledge Christine Molle, who has recently retired as our devoted Editorial Assistant since the inaugural issue, and welcome Eilon Ronal, who has recently become our new CB&DD Editorial Assistant. It is my hope that each of you who read this Editorial will actively support the journal and will share this scholarly quest to understand the phenomenal wonders of chemical biology and drug design. It is my faith that our good works will make a difference in this world that we share together.
