Perspectives on the legalization of cannabis in Canada and how this may impact university life
Year: 2018
Type: dissertation
Abstract: The Government of Canada announced the passing of bill C-45, providing legal \naccess to Cannabis in Canada and, to control and regulate its production by October 2018 \n(Canadian Broadcasting Corporation [CBC], 2017). Cannabis is the most commonly used \nillicit substance among university students, where the percentage is higher than any other \nage group (Adamson, UNICEF Office of Research, & Canadian Electronic Library, \n2013). Yet little research has been conducted on their perceptions of cannabis \nlegalization. It is inevitable that this change in cannabis policy will be implemented, and \nuniversity students are of particular importance. The purpose of this study is to further \nunderstand students’ views and concerns pertaining to the recent topic of legalization of \ncannabis in Canada. Participants were interviewed to understand, and to explore, their \nperceptions of legalization of cannabis, giving them the opportunity to express how it \nmay impact their lives, specifically while attending university. Themes arising from these \nsemi-structured interviews and their implications for future research and practice are \nexplored.
