Le gisement pléistocène supérieur de la grotte de Jaurens, à Nespouls, Corrèze, France. Les Equidés (Mammalia, Perissodactyla)

Year: 1980
Type: article
Abstract: Two Equid forms have been found in Jaurens : Equus caballus cf. gallicus , very plentiful, and Equus hydruntinus, represented by a single individual. By its dimensions the horse of Jaurens is generally not very different from the one of Solutré, Equus caballus gallicus , but, by some characters, it still looks more or less Uke the form which has preceded it, Equus caballus germanicus. Absolute datings of the site of Jaurens enable us to situate this site approximately during the time of the transition between these two sub-species. Due to the very unusually good state of the bony material uncovered, the remains of at least four foetuses have been found. In spite of these exceptional circumstances of preservation it should be stated once more that all the skeletal elements are not preserved in the same way and particularly that vertebrae and ribs are far less numerous than the other parts of the skeleton. The study of the structure of the horse population has shown it was probably made of family groups, each of them including an average number of 1 stallion, 2,25 adult mares and 3 juveniles and subadults. The occurence of foetal bones, as the low proportion of teeth 0 to 1 year old, suggest that the animals have been swept into the cave at the end of winter or in the early spring.
