Year: 2016
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: Social media is being a traction mechanism in all aspects of life and in some ways it is also a traction mechanism in terms of the visibility, recognition and influence of research. Research generates millions of documents. The monitoring, promotion and selection of a work is decisive in order to measure its capacity for scientific influence. The impact of current research can be measured through the web, so researchers are confronting the limitations of traditional systems with new measurement systems. Some of these tools have been developed by the scientists themselves with the aim of taking into account the aspects that have led to the exponential growth of science in the digital age and adequately measure the new behaviors of researchers in the web environment, to incorporate the influence and social impact of research, it has even been raised that the social impact may have correlation with the future scientific impact. Altmetrics offers instant and easy access to the immediate impact of real-time research. From the first moment of publication, it offers data on views, downloads, times shared or commented on on social networks, etc., which gives the author clues as to how their work is being promoted, and in turn adds value to the publisher's effort in achieving this task.
